Nelson LaFleur

My great grandfather was supposed to have been a captain of a ship for the Manhattan Co in the middle 1800"s. Anyone ever heard of this company?
I'm trying to find out where he died & is buried.
I have copy of a document that he docked at Port of Plattsburgh, NY in 1876. He is listed as the owner of the wooden canalboat named Emory.
His name was Nelson Flowers, also known as Nelson LaFlowers, NELSON LAFLEUR or Narcisse LaFleur. He married In Whitehall, NY. Children were born in Whitehall, Valleyfield, P.Q. Canada, Troy & New York City.
He is said to have died in 1887. I have tried to find family in census, but to no avail. Being that the children were possibly born along the Hudson River route, the family might have traved with him. I wonder how they would have been "interviewed" by the census takers.
Any help or suggestions will be appreciated
