Can anyone tell me anything about the following Riddley or Ridley family of Tatham, Lancashire Parish, England and how they were connected to a LAFOON as seen in an entry from the Parish Register in 1690? It would seem to me from a lack of parish entries after the 1640's except for burials and one marriage, and the "vague" and unique nature of the LAFOON entry itself that the family may have actually resided elsewhere and were just being buried in Tatham Parish??? Where did they actually reside? NOTES ON THE RIDDLEY FAMILY OF TATHAM PARISH, LANCASHIRE COUNTY, ENGLAND AND THEIR CONNECTION TO A LAFOON in 1690. TATHAM is a parish in Lancaster district, Lancashire. It is about 10 miles from Liverpoole, 1 mile southeast of Wennington railroad station, and 4½ East of Hornby. I ran across the name LAFOON while doing a Google book search in this parish. The name was indexed in the Lancashire Parish Register Society publications, Volume 59, which has been published in a CD. Tatham (St James the Less) Bap & Mar 1558-1812 Bur 1558-1811 Vol 59, MR59, CD59 Four other parishes were included on this CD which I also checked for Lafoon/Laffoon with no luck. These parishes were: Caton (St. Paul), Claughton (St. Chad), Gressingham(St. John), and Hornby(St. Margaret). The only LAFOON entry I could find is the following: The entry from the Tatham Church Register 1688-1693, p. 154 (St. James the Less) shows the following under “Tatham Church Burials”: “JOHN LAFOON s. to one daughter of Riddley 03 Apr 1690” From this entry and others regarding the Riddley family in Tatham Parish, I put together the following notes: ______RIDDLEY(RIDLEY) - Born probably by 1670 “dau of ____Riddley”; Either married _____LAFOON and had a son named JOHN LAFOON who died on 3 April 1690 and was buried in St. James the Less, Tatham, Lancashire County, England or else she had an illegitimate child named JOHN LAFOON by ___ LAFOON and who was buried on that date. She was possibly either the daughter of Hugh, John, or Thomas Riddley. RIDDLEY, WILLIAM – Born _____; Buried 24 April 1636 son of Gulielmi Riddley, St. James the Less, Tatham Parish, Lancashire Co., England. Note: Gulielmi is the genitive form of Gulielmus which means "William", so Gulielmi means "of William". RIDDLEY, MR. MATTHEW - Born ____ ; Buried 19 Oct 1638, St. James the Less, Tatham Parish, Lancashire County, England. P. 49 A “Mr” in front of his name meant that he was a man of some importance. Very few men in the register were given the form of address “Mr”. So he may have possibly been a member of the gentry, a squire, lord, esquire, etc. RIDDLEY, JANE - Born ___; Buried on 7 Oct 1642 St. James the Less, Tatham Parish, Lancashire Co., England p 52. Was she a wife or widow? RIDDLEY, THOMAS – Born ____; Burial 12 Nov 1662 St. James the Less, Tatham Parish, Lancashire County, England, p. 68. Was he the son of Matthew, Hugh, or William above? --------------------------2 RIDDLEY, HUGH – Christened 15 Jan 1632 son of Thomae Riddley, St. James the Less, Tatham Parish, Lancashire County, England. P. 44 Married Alice____. See below. Lancashire Record Office, UK National Archives, A2A. Lancashire County Quarter Sessions Petitions [QSP 216-287]: Tatham -- relief for Alice wife of Hugh Ridley, from Ireland. QSP/229/1 c1662 Does the above mean that Alice was from Ireland or Hugh Ridley was from Ireland? --------------------------2 RIDDLEY, JOHN – Christened 10 July 1642 son of Thomae Ridley, St James the Less, Tatham Parish, Lancashire County, England. P. 52 ---------------------------2 RIDDLEY, THOMAS – Christened 8 May 1646 son of Thomas Riddley, St. James the Less, Tatham Parish, Lancashire County, England, p 54. ---------------------------2 RIDDLEY, JANE – Christened 16 April 1646 dau of Thomas Riddley, St. James the Less, Tatham Parish, Lancashire County, England, p 56; Married John Ingman 27 Jan 1671 St. James the Less, Tatham Parish ( p 76), Lancashire County, England. John Walker either bondsman or performed the wedding. The name “John Walker” was just written behind the name of the groom John Ingman. -------------------------------+3 INGMAN, JOHN RIDDLEY, SELFFALLAH – Born ___; buried on 1 Oct 1681 in St. James the Less, Tatham Parish, Lancashire Co., England, p 83. Was she a wife or widow? In the parish register, “s” stood for “son”. “fa stood for father”. “de” meant “of”. “uxor” meant “wife of”. In going through the Tatham Church Registers, this entry for JOHN LAFOON is very unique. First of all, it would appear to me that when a child was buried, the clerk wrote the first name of the child (only) or then added the last name of the child, then wrote either “s. of” (son of) and the father’s first name or “fa.” (father) and then the full name of the father, i.e.,: “William s. of Richard Whitehead” or “William Whitehead, fa. Richard”. If an adult was buried, the full name of the adult was given only. Sometimes a title or place of residence would be added, i.e., “Mr. Matthew Riddley” or “William Edmondson de Hill House” or “William Edmonson de Longbank”. If the burial was a wife an entry might be: “Jennet Talbot uxor Richd”. No ages were given of any of the adults or children that were buried. If an illegitimate child was listed in the christenings, it was written in the following way: “John bastard of John Ellershaw the younger of Moreland and of Anne Ward” or “William bastard of Margret Howson” . There was even one that was written “supposed child of”. But I did not see any burials for an illegitimate child to compare our JOHN LAFOON entry to. Just based on what I found in the register, I have drawn a few conclusions. First, I think the child’s name was “John Lafoon”, NOT “John Lafoon Riddley”. It was indexed as “John Lafoon Riddley”, but this is the ONLY circumstance that I found in the entire register where two names were listed for a child burial or a baptism unless the last name of the parent was not given and only the surname. For example, a child burial would be written in one of two ways: “John son of Wiliam Smith” or “John Smith son of William.” In this instance, the child is given two names, first and last. I don’t believe “Lafoon” is a middle name as nowhere else in the register is a middle name given for anyone. However, I could be incorrect in my deduction. Second, I am not convinced that the child was illegitimate. He could have been as a father is not listed only a mother. However, it is strange the way it was written “to one daughter of Riddley”. This makes me think that the clerk felt it important to make note that the child’s mother was the daughter “of Riddley”. Was “Riddley” a squire or lord that he would be referred to just as “Riddley”. Since there appears to have been several Riddley’s in the area, why was “Riddley”’s first name not given. And why was the mother’s name not given? Did the Clerk not know the mother’s name? Was she living in another parish and they had decided to bury the child at Tatham instead of where the parents lived? There were no other references to a LAFOON in the Tatham Church Registers prior to 1690 (or afterwards), nor in any of the other parish registers on the CD that I received. The other parishes were all within a couple miles of each other. Tatham Parish was about 10 miles from Liverpool. There was no baptismal/christening record for this child in Tatham Parish. I saw no more references to the Riddley/Ridley family after the 1690’s. Where did they go? Notify Administrator about this message?
