I have been in contact with Lloyd Bockstruck who supervises the genealogy section of the J. Erik Jonsson Central Library in Dallas, Texas. He writes a column for the Dallas Morning News. In this paper there was a column regarding the Albemarle parish Vestry Book 1742-1786 which was just released in 2005. The article stated the following:

The Albemarle Parish Vestry Book, 1742-1786, which evidently has just been released includes the following information:

William Moss for burying Thomas Laffoon on Nov. 27, 1747

I wrote to Mr. Bockstruck and asked him to help me obtain a copy of the page from this book and I also asked him if there were any other references to Laffoon in this vestry book. He wrote back and told me that he was confused as there was NO Thomas Laffoon mentioned in the Albemarle Parish Vestry Book and asked me where I had seen this reference. I copied and pasted the reference from the Dallas Morning News to him. He wrote back and said that he had solved the mystery as follows:

I have solved the mystery. Thomas Laffoon is mentioned on page 20 of The Vestry Book of Southam Parish Cumberland County, Virginia 1745-1792 by Ann K. Blomquist. I am, however, unable to explain the garbled message from the 2005 column. It is possible that there were two titles to be featured in the column, and for lack of space the editor reduced the contents. Be that as it may, I hope this Thomas Laffoon is yours.

SO, WILLIAM MOSS WAS PAID FOR BURYING THOMAS LAFFOON (spelled in this way - NOT LAFON) IN THE PARISH OF SOUTHAM, CUMBERLAND COUNTY IN 1747 - NOT IN ALBEMARLE PARISH, SUSSEX COUNTY!!!!

The county of Cumberland was created in 1749 from Goochland County, Virginia. This would indicate, then, that this THOMAS LAFFOON who died in 1747 was probably the same THOMAS LAFFOON who in 1742 Goochland County, Virginia was a servant (probably indentured) of John Taylor.

I have ordered the Vestry Book so that I can go through it and check out William Moss, John Taylor, and other names to see if we can come up with any clues to this Thomas Laffoon. I believe he is related to William Laffoon of Henrico and Goochland Counties who died in 1744, perhaps a brother??
