At some point the Laffeys emigrated from Ireland. Your job is to ask your parents for as much info as possible about their parents and grandparents. Get DOB, DOM, placenames, etc. Then search the censuses to trace the family back to a census where it either has 1 individual, or both parents born in Ireland.
