Hi Danielle,

Have you been to the Oconto County website? They have a tremendous amount of material available re early Oconto. I have been on it several times, but was looking for Lafaire/Laferrier.

Recently, my cousin told me about some postings on this board that make us think the name LaFaire may also be LaFaive. R's and V's can look alike on censuses. Since our relatives were married in Oconto, we may have some connection.

Who were the parents of your ancestors? We believed that Louis LaFaire married Emilie, but thought her maiden name was Tremont. They had 11 or 12 kids; our great-grandfather was Alexander, born Green Bay 1855? The only birth record found for an Alexander was 1838;way too early. Family lore also states that Louis and Emilie went back to Canada at some point, so some of their kids could easily have been born in Canada.

We have established a known marriage of a Mineau and LaFaire, (Mary)also in Oconto. The marriage records give Emilie Fontaine as the mother of the bride. So where Tremont came into this, I have no idea!

Family lore goes further and states that Alexander met his wife (Susie Crowden) while she was working at his aunt's boarding house in Green Bay. I also found evidence that two Mineau brothers and Alexander worked at the same sawmill, and I have a copy of the payroll. I'm waiting to see if Oconto can come up with any other info re employee addresses, etc.

Does any of this sound familiar to you? Is there anything about sawmills or boarding houses in your family lore? Jan and I won't breathe until we hear from you!

Cheryl
