It is a good possibility. I heard it from a source who was very old who came from Peters line. Name of Katrina Rolf who was a cousin to my grandfather William Denby Lafary
Son of John Lafary and Sarah Gillman- Son of Joseph and Rebecca. Peters name on his grave was "Leferre" or "Laferre" I cant remember for sure about the first part but I do know the last part ferre is correct. They often transcribed last names as they heard them phonetically. That is why you may have different pronunciations and spellings. Some people actually changed their names diliberatly as in the case of the Lafara's. Charles Lafara
is a renown researcher and I heard him say something about this.
