St. Charles (Illinois) Chronicle, 9 August 1928 Headline: Eugene LaDue Has Penny Dated 1817 The Chronicle was no sooner in the mail last week than readers began calling that they had pennies much older than those mentioned. Mrs. Tom Collins has a number of old coins. The oldest penny is dated 1837. She had a half-penny dated 1834 and a dime of 1840. The coins were found on the Collins homestead and were lost by soldiers encamped at that spot during the Civil War. The camp was known as Camp Kane. Mrs. Thure Johanson has a penny dated 1822. It was found in the house on the property they recently bought on Geneva Road. The oldest penny was brought into the Chronicle office by Eugene LaDue. It is dated 1817 and is almost as large as a half dollar. ---------- I am not related to nor researching this family and have no further information. Notify Administrator about this message?
