How interesting. The records I have seen lists most of them as Free People of Color normally not a euphemism for white or Native American. However, you are correct about the mixture of Native American in the family Atakapas to be exact.
The Barabinos have been in Louisiana before 1820. The Noras are the Atakapas branch.
In Mississippi, the Lesassiers and the Barabinos married forming my families branch which is the largest known Barabinos outside of Genoia, Italy even though they came to America via France hence many, many French given names exist in the family. On to Haiti or Santo Domingo and the to Louisiana and Mississippi (Bay St. Louis to be precise).
My great great grandmother was Ladner. She was born in Jackson County, Mississippi. I do not know for sure her race. I do know that her children were listed as colored.
Thank you fo your information.
Deborah
