In 1978 the U.S. Navy created the Religious Program Specialists rating (a career field) which in essence was designed to function as a chapel managers. I was one of a select few chosen to start this new carrer field. My first duty station was the Fleet Chaplains Office, Commander in Chief, U.S. Atlantic Fleet. The Chaplain assigned to ths post was Chaplain (Captain) John F. Laboon, S.J. So during Chaplain Laboon's last 2 years in the Navy I worked for Father Laboon. I have to say what a terrific person he except duriing football season, especially if the Pittsburg Steelers lost on Sunday. It is also worthy to note that during WWII "Jake" served in the submarine service and then after the war he entered the seminary and ultimately asked his Bishop for permission to return tothe Navy as a CHaplain. It should also be noted that an old TV series called "Silent Service" did an episode about Jake and his courage to stay in the water with a downed pilot while his submarine dove to escape from a Zero aircraft trying to sink the submarine. Anyway it was a real pleasure working for Father Laboon.
