Your assumption is accurate as to the French-Canadian, and is probably accurate as to the corruption of the spelling; the oldest LABAY I have listed is Noeus LABE who was likely born in 1830 or earlier based on what info we have on his (only?) son, Charles Callias LABE who was born in Montreal, Quebec, Canada in about 1851.
