Thank you for the info Ruth - this is interesting. I have uncovered some more information about my lineage that may fill in some of the blanks. I am able to trace it back as far back as Louis George Labatte, who came to Canada around 1800 from a fishing village in Normandy. He fought for the Royal Navy in the War of 1812, then moved to Detroit shortly after the war ended in 1814. He then sailed to east end of Georgian Bay to a town called "Tiny" Thunder Bay, also known as Simcoe County, and was one of the original settlers there. He had one surviving son, Michael, from his first marriage to a Chippewa Indian, and 5 children, Ambrose, Antoine, Joseph, Elizabeth and Louis George II, from his second marriage to a half-breed Indian squaw. Some Labatte's mostly living in St. Catherines now kept the "e" - some dropped the "e" unofficially several generations ago. Any more information about Louis George Labatte would be helpful - that's as far back as I can confirm.
