This is getting quite complicated. I have recently found a record of a birth of Jean Baptiste to a panis slave Marie owned by Labadie in 1746. I also found Jean's death notice in 1792 at 46 indicating he was still a panis slave to Labadie. I also found another record of the birth of another child to another slave owned by Descompte in the same set of records. I am now considering 3 slave women - Marie, another, and Mannon. I have found no indications that Labadie fathered any indian children. By the way PANIS is the French word for PAWNEE. Go to the Pawnee web site and read all about it. Just do a Google search to get there.
The Canadian records of New France all indicate that slavery was common, also that Detroit was a main slavery market. Most slaves in the St Laurence basin were Pawnee imported by the Iroqouis to New France and sold for whatever. Black slaves were not considered to be able to withstand to climate in Canada and were very rare.
I know that this may be upsetting but the truth appears now to be that Labadie had 15 legitimate children and no indian children with counts of between 8 to 18 indian slave children from at least 2 , perhaps more Pawnee slave women. The 2 thatI have found arent even on the list of 23 known children. The slaves ran his flour mill and his household on the Windsor side of the river.
So much for Pontiac, or the possible SIOUX descendency.
The records are obscure because they are not listed as Labadie or Descompte, but rather as "bapteime (name)(panis) or (panis de Nation)". The name Labadie or Descompte only appears as "owner" in the body of the text with other people listed as godparents.
Have fun.Gerry
