Thought you might enjoy some of the info I have gathered about 10 years of digging in courthouses and Santa Fe.The Labadie Families in New Mexico should get someone to write a book. Lorenzo Labadie is the most interesting person I have ever researched.
Grandparents: Dr. DOMINGO LABADIA (French Canadian, married Micaela Padilla in Santa Fe on Nov. 2, 1766 She was the daughter of Juan Antonio Padilla and Margarita Martin her father Sebastian Martin of La Soleded.
Parents: Juan Pablo Labadie and Maria Rosa DeLos Reyes Sisneros.
Lorenzo Labadie b. 15 Aug. 1825 at Tome in Valencia Co., N.M.
1851 Sheriff Valencia Co.
1854 letter where he was paid for being Sheriff of Santa Fe.
1855 Indian agent for Utes
1856 Indian agent at Abique
1857 Went with brother in-laws Col. Manuel Chavez to what is now T. or C., N.M. and killed Chief Cuchillo Negro. Under orders of Col. William W. Loring.
1861 Indian agent at Tucson Arizona
1862 Indian agent at Anon Chico
1863 Indian agent at Bosque Redondo (a lot of history here.
1865““for Jicarilla Indians near Agua Negra { Santa Rosa}
1867 sent to Texas to get Indians to release White captives (neat story)
1871 took out merchants license and a “wine shop”
1873 Santa Rosa post office { Tranquilino Labadie Postmaster , age 19}
1875 {letter} Agent of territory of N.Mex. to pick up murderer in Colo.{Sheriff of San Miguel Co. ?}
1873, 1876, 1878, Various land papers
1880 Took census of San Miguel Co., Billy the Kid on it. Lot of history here also.
1884 Post Mater of Santa Rosa May 8, 84- Dec. 14, 1898.
1885 20 April signs petition to get Rifles for Puerto De Luna.
1893 won case against Celso Baca for cheating on Election for seat on the 30th. Legislation Assembly of N.M. as representation for Guadalupe co. (Feb.2, 1893) to say these two were not friends would be putting it lightly. It wasn’t long after this Celso (a big man) said something about Lorenzo at a pubic meeting and Lorenzo heard it jumped up and got hold of Celso and the men there had to pull him off. They were both up in years.
1896 June 29 wrote letter concerning the Agua Negra Land grant. Juan Patron (son in law) owned part of that. Patron had been killed at P.D.L. Another story.
1904 Funeral Aug. 11. You will read in history books that his grave has been lost, don’t believe it has a nice monument and fenced at old churchyard in west P.D.L.
This is off some of the notes I have. I haven’t gone in to my old records, but this will give you a start. Lorenzos wife Rayitos Giddings is just as colorful in her own right she was raised and educated by an AuntOTules the Lady Gambler from Santa Fe. Books about her also.
Rayitos was a well know medca(doctor)
Tranqulino his son and Juan Patron went to school together at Santa Fe. After all the trouble in Lincoln co. and Patron got shot in the leg he went to stay awhile with him at Santa Rosa. There he met and married Beatriz.
By the way the farm we lived on was their place. It was named Santa Rosa. Its about 3 1/2 miles south of what is now called Santa Rosa.All the history books will tell you the town was name after the chapel across from Celso Bacas, but that was called Eden at the time. When the railroad came through they moved the mail up there. Just remember your family gave the name Santa Rosa.
I could go on for days but now that you have this info you can get copies of all this at Santa Fe, Las Vegas, and Santa Rosa. Don’t take my word for any of it in case human error. GOOD LUCK and let me know if you learn any thing new. Sometime I’ll get you a list of books to read.Norma
