John McLoid Ferguson

Does anyone have proof of the identity of John McLoid Ferguson’s wife’s maiden name? According to the cemetery records of Atlanta Methodist Church, she is shown as Sarah A. Smith b. 16 May 1832 d. 16 Feb. 1902. Her birth date goes along with the 1900 Winn Parish, LA Census. I have reason to believe she is Sarah Ann Collins b. 6 Dec 1837 (per family bible) daughter of David & Hester Collins in MS for the following reasons.

In the 1870 Census -Winn Parish Sarah A. Ferguson is listed as age 34 (b.a. 1836). A daughter, Hester Ann, is listed as age 13, and Abendego Collins age 57, b. SC is in the household. Abendego is the brother of David Collins listed above.

In the 1880 Census – Winn Parish, Sarah is listed as age 44 (b.a. 1836). Her daughter Hester Ferguson, age 22, LA, FL, MS is in the household of Samuel & Emily Peace, listed as niece. Emily Peace is Sarah’s Ann Collins’ sister. Emily & her husband are also buried in Atlanta Methodist Church Cemetery as well as Hester Ann & her husband, William L. Pharis.

Since 1870 census does not give relationship, my question was “is Hester Ann really a daughter of John M. & Sarah A. Ferguson?” I was able to prove this by the obituaries of her brothers, James D. & John D. where Hester Pharis or Mrs. W.L. Pharis is listed as a surviving sister.

So my question is…does anyone know anything about Sarah A. wife of John McLoid Ferguson, the name Smith on her stone, and the birth date?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
