First of all, do you have a marriage record for William and Christine that shows when they got married (or if they got married?) What did Permelia die of? When exactly did she die? If she had been sick for two years she may have been in a sanitarium in Bossier. Was her condition related to the birth of Sarah in 1858? As for why she left her daughter with William, well she's dead and he is Sarah's father.

My guess, and of course it's simply a guess, is that complications from Sarah's birth made Permelia unable to care for Sarah. Christine moved in to help out.
