Shelia, don't know if you are still monitoring this forum. If George Washington Hodges was born about 1858 in Minden LA, he may have been a member of a large Hodges family that arrived from Georgia in that same year and purchased from the Lee family several thousand acres around what is now Cotton Valley in Webster Parish about 18 miles northwest of Minden. The family included an aging patriarch Matthew Hodges, son Edmund W. Hodges, and eight children of Edmund W. and Mary McGowan Hodges (several nearing maturity and at least two of whom would fight in the Civil War), as well as 60+ slaves. Many of that Hodges family, including Matthew, Edmund W. Sr., and several of his Hodges children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren are buried in two cemeteries outside the town of Cotton Valley. One of Matthew's direct great grandsons was A.J. Hodges who founded the famed Hodges Gardens in Many LA. I myself am descended from Matthew Hodges via Edmund W. Hodges, Edmund W. Hodges Jr., Thomas Edmund Hodges, and Annabel Hodges Bertrand (my mother). Though I haven't come across a reference to a George Washington Hodges, he could very well have been a son or grandson of Edmund W. Hodges Sr., born soon after the family arrived in the Minden area in 1858. If so, I hate to think about how rough that trip was for his pregnant mother as the wagons crossed from Georgia to Louisiana that year.
