Looking for any info on Samuel A. Smith who married Elmina Taunton in Union Parish, LA on 13 Feb. 1851 (according to Union Parish Marriage Book 1, page 15; this might be the date of the marriage bond and not the actual marriage). Is this the same couple as was listed as follows in the family Bible of Henry Taunton and Temperance Davis of Tallapoosa Co., AL: "Lovetess Elmina Ann Davis, born June 6, 1828." "L.E.A. Davis & S.A. Smith, February 26, 1851." If so, why was Elmina listed in the family Bible under the Davis surname, but under the Taunton surname on her marriage record? She was born just 4 months before Henry Taunton and Temperance Davis were married; was she born out of wedlock, or was she an illegitimate child of Temperance's by someone other than Henry? Was she a younger sister of Temperance's, but raised by the Taunton family and adopted their surname? By the way, Temperance (Davis) Taunton was the daughter of Vincent Davis and Izora Taunton, according to the family Bible. Did Elmina marry a Taunton before her marriage to Samuel Smith (if so, though, why was that marriage not recorded in the family Bible)? Henry, Temperance, and their children all remained in Tallapoosa Co., AL, so what was Elmina doing in Union Parish, LA? Several members of the Taunton family eventually settled in the Union Parish, LA/Union Co., AR area, but not until the 1860s. So, who did Elmina belong to? Does anyone out there recognize her, or know anything about her husband Samuel A. Smith? I can't find them anywhere on the 1860 census.
