Jackie, I don't know for sure if there is a connection to your family. My ggrandfather was named Riley Dixon. He was supposedly born in 1873 in St. Landry Parish, LA. I've been searching for his family for quite a while now and I just keep hitting dead ends. He got baptised as a Catholic in 1949 at the insistence of his wife. He had listed as his parents Gallus Dixon and Lenora(Elnora?) Mathews. I found a census that was a strange coincidence to me. It was for the year 1880 and it had a Caroline Mathews who was from Tennessee. She had 3 children listed, Louis, Julia and Riley. They all had the Mathews last name and they were living in St. Landry Parish, LA at the time of the 1880 census. It didn't say that Caroline was a widow, though. Now these names of Julia, Louis and Riley are in my family of Dixons. Riley, himself, one of his daughters named Julia and one of his sons named Louis. According to my ggreat aunt Jesse, Riley was raised by a Dave Mathews and his wife Elizabeth(Betty) when Riley was about 5 yrs. old. This census showed that Riley Mathews was 5 yrs. old in 1880. Julia and Louis were in their teens. I just have this hunch that the Riley Mathews listed in that 1880 census is my ggrandfather, Riley Dixon. Somewhere as he got older, I believe he took the Dixon last name but I don't know why. It's such a big mystery and I can't solve it. He had 10 children. Their names were: West, Louis, Lenora, Malinda, Cornelia, Ida (Esmerelda), Jesse, Lydia, Sarah, and Julia. Great Aunt Jesse is still living and she doesn't know very much about her daddy. They never spoke to him about his parents or his past and Riley never volunteered any information to his kids. He was a very quiet man from what I understand. If any of this might have a connection to your family of Mathews, please let me know. Thank you so much for responding, Jackie.
