Stephen Benton Herring b 1846 MS

Seeking information for Stephen Benton [aka Benton] Herring born 1846 [unproven date my me.. Dec 6 1846] in Mississippi. His sonís [Adolphus Cannon Herring] WWI draft registration lists his father (Stephen Benton) as having been born in Monticello, [Lawrence Co.,] Mississippi. "Benton" Herring was my sonís paternal great grandfather.

According to the 1910 census, Stephen B. and Ada E. rented a house on Avenue J in Kentwood, Tangipahoa Par., Louisiana. Stephen was 64 years old and was born in Mississippi, as had both his parents. Ada was 41 years old and was born in Louisiana, as had both her parents. Stephen and Ada were married for 20 years, this being his 2nd marriage, her 1st marriage. Ada had given birth to 9 children and all nine were still living. Stephen had none listed as occupation, Ada was listed as a keeper of a boarding house. Living in the household were the following children: Thomas B(enton) age 14, Adolphus C(annon) age 13, Floyd W(illiam) [he is my sonís ancestor] age 6, Mattie L age 11, Walter age 3, and Myrtis A. age 1 8/12. Date of enumeration was 15 Apr 1910.

Stephen Benton was married to Ada E. Brewer, daughter of Mattie (maiden name unknown) Brewer; I have not identified her father as yet. I have not found a marriage record for them, they were probably married in Mississippi, though this is purely assumption on my part. 1910 census stated they had been married 20 years so their marriage date must have been sometime about 1890.

A Benton Herring (age 34) is found on the 1880 census in Lawrence Co MS living with his 26 year old wife Martha. The age is right for this being Stephen Benton Herring. Also living in the home was a 4 year old male named Willie. [In 1920 a William Herring was living with Ada Herring, a widow, in Jefferson Co TX. He was listed as her son even though he was listed as age 48, only about 2 years younger than she.] Looking at Rootswebís Lawrence Co archives, I find Martha was Martha Ann "Mattie" Cowart.

From other peopleís research I have found that Stephen Benton Herring (known as Benton) was the son of David J. Herring and Amanda Jane Cannon.

Iím very interested in finding other people researching this family.

Thank you,

Mary Craighead Nolte
