Thank you, Rick! I appreciate all the info. I have my work cut out for me and will start looking for this info later today.

I think I will search for the book you listed last and see if I can purchase it.

I would love to come to Louisiana to do research, but I can't right now because of my dogs. Plus ... the heat and humidity you guys are experiencing right now is a bit much for me. In northern Michigan we are barely getting to 70 degrees and getting down to the mid 40's at night. It's more my type of weather than mid 90's and high humidity!

I sincerely appreciate all your help and suggestions and plan on looking at each and every one of them to see if I can find the info.

I ordered a death certificate for a Sidney Steen who died September 25, 1913 and thought it might be Elias' son, but the certificate lists this Sidney's father as "Gustin" (Augustin?) Steen - no mother indicated.

I still think this might be Elias' son, but have to find further info on Augustin born circa 1812 in Louisiana. I did find Augustin on the 1850 Grand Pointe, St. Martin Parish, Louisiana census, 38-year old Augustin is living next door to [Hilaire] Elias Steen and his family. I do not see a Sidney on any of the census reports with Augustin, but then if Sidney was his son, he was probably out of the house by that time since he was born in 1832.

I've searched Ancestry.com and cannot find any further information on Augustin on either family trees or any other historical reports - other than 1850, 1860 and 1870 census reports and an 1860 Slave Schedule.

Based on an age calculator, Augustin's Sidney was born either July 31, 1832 (if using age at death as 81 years, 1 month, 26 days) OR January 31, 1832 (if using age at death as 81 years, 7 months, 26 days). The month was marked over on the death certificate.

If this Sidney's birthday is January 31, 1832, then this may be [Hilaire] Elias Steen's son, Sidney and whoever gave the information at the time of death had the wrong father. The death certificate indicates this Sidney was born in St. Landry Parish.

Elias' son Sidney was born on January 31, 1832 in St. Martin Parish (Sidney indicates he was born in St. Martin Parish on both of his Civil War pension applications).

So ... I certainly have my work cut out for me. Thanks again -

Toni
