Thank you, Rick. I live in a small town in northern Michigan near the tip of the Lower Peninsula, but believe it or not, we do have a local Latter Day Saints office. I will check with them on Monday and see if I can arrange an appointment to go to their office. I think I can order microfiche and they will get it for me.
I've searched and searched and not found much with plantation history. Maybe I've just been searching for the wrong items. I did find a couple of fantastic maps of plantations along the Mississippi which listed plantation owners, but was the wrong area for the plantations owned by either Elias Steen or Sidney Singleton.
This is one site that has info, but not sure if it's the site I found the maps on: http://www.lib.utexas.edu/maps/histus.html
I have not contacted my local genealogical society because I didn't think they would have much, if anything, on Louisiana since we are in northern Michigan, but I will next week. I have tried to contact genealogical societies in the St. Martin area in Louisiana, but no luck so far.
Unfortunately, the option of hiring a researcher won't work at this time, but maybe in the future.
Thanks for the information. I will definitely visit the site you mentioned and look for the other records as well. I really appreciate you taking the time to respond to my inquiry.
