Guide to Church Records in LA by Rev. Donald J. Hebert is an excellent source for Catholic Churches in St. Landry Parish. To see a copy of Fr. Hebert's obit and a list of his publications go to hebertpublications.com

I found a more recent list of Parish Information, listed alphabetically by city at:
http://www.dol.louisiana.org/parishes.html
Although more recent, I don't believe all Parishes are listed.

Individuals who live away from "home" as I do, may want to buy a copy of Fr. Hebert's CD. Although it is costly, it is much less expensive than buying all the books (41) as I have done.

St. Landry Catholic Church, 900 Union St., Opelousas, LA 70570. Records begin in 1776. Early records can be found in Fr. Hebert's SWLR, 41 vols beg 1750 and ending 1909.

St. Landry Parish Court House, Opelousas, LA, 70550. Records begin in 1803. Earlier colonial records (1764-1803) are kept at the Louisiana State Archives, P. O.Box 44422 Capitol Station, Baton Rouge, LA 70804.

Before he died, I asked Fr. Hebert if I could do look-ups in his publications to which he replied: "All I ask is that you cite full credit." I always do and wish others would do the same. The man was a genius. He published not only Catholic Church Records from the Diocese of Lafayette, but Successions, Civil Marriages, etc., from 13 area courthouses.

Individuals looking for their ancestors and/or their widows who filed for the Confederate States Army pension may find what they are looking for at Louisiana Secretary of State Confederate Pension Applications Index:

On a personal note, I am a French-speaking native of Ville Platte, Evangeline Parish, LA. I have lived in Alabama since 1954. Several years ago, I retired from the University of Alabama in Birmingham where I was an Editorial Assistant in the Office of the Sr. VP for Health Affairs.

I do not charge to do research. If the information is in my database (84,000+ individuals), I may be able to tell you who your ancestors from Southwest Louisiana are (one surname only, please). The only time I am compensated is when someone buys a copy of my research.

Best regards to all who read this,
