Theophilus Elmer, Early Louisiana Settler

I am appealing to anyone that has any information or suggestions to help me in my search for the ancestors of a THEOPHILUS ELMER that is listed in a chapter of "Southwest Louisiana" edited by William Henry Perrin and published by Gulf Publishing Co. of New Orleans in 1891. THEOPHILUS ELMER is listed as one of the early settlers, The settlement of Opelousas, and St. Landry Parish, Louisiana.

He is also shown in the 1810 Census of Opelousas Parish. He may have been a doctor and was married to a Constance Leonard. Their son, Theophile Ogden O'Brin Elmer was born January 01, 1811 in Opelousas, St. Landry Parish, Louisiana and he married Marie Estelle Magdelaine Boutte in St. Landry Catholic Church, Opelousas, St. Landry Parish, La. on August 30, 1831. This comes from church records.

THEOPHILUS ELMER is my 3rd Great Grandfather. I have been successful in tracing the Boutte line back, but do not get past Opelousas, LA. on the Elmer line. I assume the name is English, however, his son also has an Irish name in there. Does anyone have any idea as to the path "Elmers" could have taken that ended up in southwest Louisiana?
