Dear Karen,

Hyppolite Johnson (Joseph) m. 23 Sept. 1834 Louisa Reed (Opel. Ct. Hse.: Mar. #60)

Note from Rose: Could his parents have been Joseph Jeansonne & Sophie Gilleau?

Louisa Reed m. 23 Sept. 1834 Hypolite Johnson (Opel. Ct. Hse.: Mar. #60).

Note from Rose: Her parents were not named.

Source: Southwest Louisiana Records by Rev. Donald J. Hebert, Vol. 3, pages 360 & 541

Sometimes, in his earlier books, Fr. Hebert included the names of the parents of the marrying couple in his SWLR. I don't know exactly when he stopped doing this, but I believe it must have been when the parents' names were no longer listed in the civil marriage record. Some people I know, sent for a copy of the civil marriage, but were disappointed when parents' names were not listed.

I have listed 6 children for Hyppolite and Louisia, all of whom were bt. at St. Landry Catholic Church, Opelousas, LA. I don't have spouses for any of the children. My guess is that their civil marriage was followed by what the church calls a "validation", and you may be able to find a marriage record at St. Landry Catholic Church, 900 Union Street, Opelousas, LA 70570. 1-337-942-6552. You may want to call ahead and ask about fees..

I am a French-speaking native of Ville Platte, Evangeline Parish, LA. I have lived in Birmingham, AL since my marriage to Ed Wells in 1954. Birmingham has one of the best research libraries in the Southeast - sone say it is "the best".

One more question: Does Hyppolite belong to Jean Jeansonne & Anastasie Marie Prejean? In his civil marriage record to Louisa it says he is the son of (Joseph).

Avec mes meilleurs sentiments
(with my very best wishes)
Rosie Morein Wells
