I know that there were two Stewart families that migrated to the Mississippi Territory as early as 1790. Two James Stewarts (Stuart) and another Stewart brother.

One James Stewart became involved in Mississippi Government, the other James Stewart was living in Jefferson County, Miss. Now, he was born in Roberson County, NC, his father was named James his Mother was an Elizabeth Stewart. James sr. died when the boy was small. After migrating to the Territory He married a Calvit Daughter in 1792. While in Jefferson County, he owned and operated a Grocery store and Public Place, which was a Tavern. 1820 they were divorced, and the family migrated to Rapides Parish, La. James Stewart died in 1824 in Baton Rouge, La. His son James Duncan Stewart remained in Baton Rouge and became a Deputy the same year. Now there is a Stewart Bible from this particular family online, also all of the children were in La and into Texas. Now, there are stories in the Miss records of a James Stewart who had lived in either SC or Georgia. Seems like he had dropped his family off at a home in Ga, went on to do whatever by horseback, and upon returning was accused of stealing horses.. Big too do..

Next story was that he was captured by either Indians or bad men, and taken into Indian Territory. He was returned alive and well. So, not sure if there were three James Stewarts.. think that might well be possible. Don't know.
give me yell at mareleigh@yahoo.com and I will send you all the data I have on the Stewarts.
