It is not known why W.H Zimmerman left his family in Alexandria, Virginia around 1855 and relocated to New Orleans, Louisiana by 1857. W. H disappeared from Virginia after the 1850 census and never reappeared in Virginia Most likely he left after the birth of his last child, Alfred in 1854-55. We firmly believe that a man named W. H Zimmerman appeared on the 1860 census in Jefferson City Louisiana. Here we find his name as Wilmer of William H. Zimmerman marrying a Mary Jane Stradford on 10 Dec 1857 in New Orleans Parish. They had no children.
Wilmer/William Enlisted in the Civil War servce # Jun 1861 In New Orleans. He enlisted aa a 1st Lieutenant in Captian Theodore McGinnis Company ( Jefferson Cadets) 1st reg. Polish Brigade. His enlistment record show him as being born in Virginia and age of 41. He was promoted to Captain 1 aut 1862.
There are numerous articles about W. H Zimmerman during the time period of 1860 to 1878. He apparent died some time that year. He was said to be a politican, Fire department member and merchant. the 1867 directory has find W.H operating a Lumber Yard at Water Street, North of Ninth at address #187. Later directories has him operating a Wood and Coal yard at 784 Magazine and his residence at 507 Constance The 1879 directory had M.J Zimmerman widow, still at same address.
We would like to find an obit. for both W. H and Mary Jane. also what cemetery where buried. W. H is the posters 3 grandfather. We have no trace fo W. H after 1878.
