Hi Craig

The Matte family originated in Normandy France. The first Matte in North America was Nicolas MAtte. He is listed in the First Quebec Census in 1666. THe Mattes in Opelousas are descendants of his. It appears that the first Mattes to migrate to Louisiana were around 1820 and they came from Quebec.
