CAMP CLAIBORNE-WWII

Dear Peggy,
I am a native of Ville Platte, Evangeline Parish, LA. The Evangeline Club, located just outside the city limits of VP, had a live orchestra 6-nights a week. And what an orchestra that was!
Large numbers of servicemen from Camp Claiborne came to the club where they met young women from surrounding areas who also came to the club. The girls enjoyed meeting and dancing with the young men, most of whom were really nice. Many good marriages resulted from these meetings. I remember quite a few. My cousin's marriage lasted 50-years, until the death of her spouse last year.
Many families provided home-cooked meals and a place to sleep. For many years after the war ended, my family received Christmas cards from several of the young men who had visited our home.
Since retiring, I have enjoyed genealogy as a hobby. My children want to know "what was it like when...?" I am glad you reminded me about the camp.
Young men from the 82nd Air Borne Div. were visitors to the club also. Their division later suffered a large number of casualties.
Sincerely,
Rosie Wells
Birmingham, AL
