Thank you so much for responding and for the details that you provided. I have been examining and comparing the info that I have which, unfortunately, seems inadequate to determine if we are talking about the same family. Also, there seems to be conflicting info with the various documents that I've found and the stories that have been passed down through the generations.
One story is that a Jack (who could be Jackson) was born in Scotland to an American mother and a Scottish father while they were visiting there. Or, it could be that Jackson's father, whose name might have been named Jack(son), was the one born in Scotland. In addition, the family is somehow connected with a Jack McClelland (I'm not sure if this is the spelling used by this family), who may also have been born in Scotland. I have no additional info on him.
Unfortunately, I do not know the middle name (if any) of my John Howell or where or when he was born. I do not know if he married or had kids.
Regarding my Jackson, who was born around 1814, some documents say that he was born in Florida while other documents say that he was born in Alabama. Currently, I have no way to know which is correct. I do know that he was in De Soto Parish, Louisiana by 1852, but don't know when he arrived there. I don't know where he died to search for death records, which might have the names of his parents and their birth places.
My Jackson's wife, Mary Eliza, was born in North Carolina around 1829. I don't know where specifically she was born or anything about her parents or siblings, if any. I don't know where or when my Jackson and his wife met or married.
In my genealogical research I've learned that info needs to be cross verified by multiple sources. If your family and mine are connected, there's a big gap that needs to be filled. It seems premature to connect the dots at this point. Do you know of any online sources that can fill that gap?
Thanks again for your response.
