How long have I ignored the records because of "family tradition". One writer claims there were 5 brothers who came to Louisiana from Germany. (How many times have I heard that tall tale?) One genealogist claims they were "definitely French". Who knows what the blood was; but the Hingle Family of Louisiana was definitely of Swiss extraction. Jean Pierre Hingle was a Swiss Soldier. He claims to be so in the births of his first three (apparently) children. It was common practice for a Swiss Soldier to be hired to protect the colony of "La Louisiane". According to de Ville, he was a colonist in Mobile. Per usual practice, after serving in the Swiss Army a few years, he took a job in the colony, this time as a carpenter in New Orleans. He was married ca.1747, and his children were christened at the St. Louis Church in New Orleans. The Hingles are Swiss! I would be happy to share more information.
