Thanks Thomas. Hopefully I can find them on the 1860 or 1850 census. I have them on the 1870 census living in Webster Parish Louisiana. But 3 of their children were born in South Carolina with birth dates:1849, 1851, & 1852. My grandfather who was the grandson of Joseph Carter said that he was a free man and that he had his "papers" and was able to give land to his children. I have not been able to find any manumission records or land documents. I am very stumped, but thank you for the information and I will look on the SC slave records again. I checked before but could never seem to find Joseph, Alice, and the children (Elis, Aley, Isam) together. But I do understand that the slave records did not list names only ages.
