I looked at land patents for Union Parish and think that L. Smith was Lazarus Smith. He patented land in 1858 and 1859 that was very close to that of John Gray and some of the other neighbors shown on the 1860 census. Lazerus Smith is also on the 1867 voters list for Union Parish found on the USGenWeb site. But I can't find even a close match from before or after 1860 in census records.
