John Freeland, Resident of New Orleans 1820's - 1850?

  of 18872

This is regarding John Freeland who lived a good part of his life in New Orleans. He was a tobacco merchant, and a cotton merchant. His warehouse was on Poydras Street.

Mr. Freeland was born in 1802 and married Rosalie Bradfute, of Lynchburg, Virginia in 1837. They lived in New Orleans until at least 1847/48.
Mr. Freeland died in 1872 in Richmond,Virginia.

I was recently in New Orleans, and did some research on John Freeland. (It looked like he had a brother, William, living in New Orleans, as well.) He was living there as late as 1847, when he did recruiting duty for his Louisiana unit of US Army for the War with Mexico. I read two letters that he wrote. One, the first, was written in 1847 to his mother, Mrs. Sarah Freeland. She was living in New York City at that time. The second letter, I believe was from him, but I am not sure, because it was written in 1855 to his sister on the event of their mother's death. John was living in California at Bidwell's Bar in Butte County (a goldrush community), where he was the Justice of the Peace. But, in 1854, he purchased a building in Richmond, Virginia. I believe it was at Ninth and Main Streets.

He was both a tobacco and a cotton merchant in New Orleans -- in fact, I even found his addresses. He must have gone to Louisiana as a young man and stayed for about 20 years. His grave marker in Richmond states that he was born in New Orleans, but I just can't believe that. So, maybe his parents were Sarah and James and they moved to Virginia, and then John and his brother moved to New Orleans.

I would appreciate any thoughts/information that people would be willing to share.

Thank you so much!!
