RUSHEN (RUSHING?), GRIFFEN St. Tammany Parish
GRIFFEN-GRIFFIN-BARTLEY-RUSHEN (RUSHING?, RUSHEON?)
Please help me if you can…(all events listed, save the birth of Eliza BARTLEY, are in St. Tammany Parish, LA)
William C. GRIFFEN m. 10 Jul 1823 St. Tammany Par., LA to Eliza BARTLEY (b.ca.1810 MS) & had issue:
• William R. GRIFFEN
• Rebecca GRIFFEN m1? Mr. RUSHEN & had issue; m2. Alfred LA CROIX & had issue:
• Ripley GRIFFEN m. Nancy & had issue
• Elizabeth GRIFFEN
• Matilda Ellen GRIFFEN m. Henry OTT & had issue
• (daughter) GRIFFEN (per 1952 note “other child” & another female in 1840 census)
• (daughter) GRIFFEN (?) (another female in 1840 census)
Rebecca GRIFFEN had two daughters by a Mr. RUSHEN
Lavinia (Lavenia) [GRIFFIN] RUSHEN (b.ca.1840-1841) m. 19 Jan 1860 St. Tammany Par., LA to Zachariah STRAIN
Martha A. [GRIFFIN] RUSHEN (b.ca.1842-1845) m. 22 Jul 1866 St. Tammany Par., LA to Jules C. GREGOIRE
Both of these daughters are enumerated on the 1850 census in St. Tammany Parish, LA in the household of their grandmother, Eliza GRIFFIN. They are enumerated as Lavenia GRIFFIN & Martha GRIFFIN. However, their marriage license reflects another (legal) surname as they were married as Lavinia RUSHEN & Martha RUSHEN. Later, both are listed in the Zachariah STRAIN bible as Lavenia GRIFFIN & Martha GRIFFIN. I can only imagine their father was a RUSHEN (RUSHING?, RUSHEON?) but was not involved in their lives.
The family spells the name “GRIFFEN” (with an “E”). However, Eliza was illiterate. In her census the name was spelled “GRIFFIN” (with an “I”). Although Rebecca GRIFFEN lived and married in St. Tammany Par., LA, I have not found an instance of her being with the children. Lavinia, however, named a daughter Rebecca (named for her grandmother?)
Can anyone guide me in the right direction for any or all of the following information:
The parents of William C. GRIFFEN (and what happened to him?)
The parents of Eliza BARTLEY
The missing information on the family of William C. GRIFFEN & Eliza BARTLEY
The spouses of the children of William & Eliza
The elusive and mysterious Mr. RUSHEN (RUSHING?, RUSHEON?), father of Lavinia & Martha and possibly 1st husband of Rebecca GRIFFEN.
All help is greatly appreciated! Happy 4th! And a special thanks to our wonderful soldiers.
