Colonel Alexandre de Clouet was born January 23, 1763 in New Orleans, son of Alexandre Francois Joseph \de Clouet\ de Piedre and Marie Anne "Louise" de Favrot. He died on January 23, 1816 in St. Martin Parish. He married Catherine Charlotte Maraffret Layssard on March 25, 1786 in St. Martin Parish, La. at the St. Martin de Tours Church. She was born on Fort Chartres, St. Francis Parish on the Wabash River, Illinois. They had seven children that I know of. He commanded a Regiment of 500 drafted militia from all parts of Louisiana. It was part of the brigade of Louisiana and Mississippi drafted militia under Brigadier General David Bannister Morgan at Chalmette during the War of 1812. Bernard de Marigny, a member of the Louisiana Legislature, considered de Clouet a man "of limited intellect, and not qualified to fill the position he occupied". Although de Marigny regarded the rumors of conspiracy "a bit of foolishness". de Clouet was suspected, because of his Creole heritage, to be partial to the British due to his family being patronized by the Spanish government. de Marigny knew better. "A rather singular motion was passed to award a stand of regimental colors to Colonel Alexandre de Clouet of the Baton Rouge militia - the only such award to any officer. He was popular, true, but subsequent events would not reveal him as a man of shining armor". (BLAZE OF GLORY by Carter p.138). 1814, December - Alexandre Joseph de Clouet was a good friend of Magloire Guichard, Speaker of the House in the Louisiana Legislature. Guichard was also a good friend of Fulwar Skipwith. Prior to the [December] 28th, de Clouet visited Guichard late at night at his house. de Clouet repeatedly asked Guichard why the Legislature was still in session. Guichard fell asleep during the inquest. In the morning, still not given an answer to his satisfaction, de Clouet left Guichard's house. He ran into Abner Duncan, and asked if it was true that the Legislature was going to surrender the city to the British? Duncan interperted it as fact and repeated it to Jackson as so. (see BLAZE OF GLORY by Carter). The above is one of the main reasons Jackson declared martial law on the city. Notify Administrator about this message?
