Laurent Duchin Margaret Elizabeth Gibson Panowicz

My husband's Louisiana branch starts with these two people; Laurent born in France c. 1836, and Margaret born in New York c. 1855. They were married on 22 May 1871 in Orleans Parrish. They had one child that we know of, Elizabeth Rebecca Duchin born April 1975 in New Orleans. By 1880 Margaret had remarried to an unknown Delaune, so census info is non-existent for this marriage! I am also unable to find either as single people.

According to my sister in law, Margaret (possibly Marguerite) was adopted by a sea captain from Louisiana. She has the name as Pahnowitz, a name not found in any census anywhere (possibly Panowicz). She was raised in New Orleans by these people, although she knew her place of birth and last name.

Any help would be greatly appreciated as we are at an impasse!
