Algernon name in LA--1880 (Henry Al. Horn)
My gr-grandfather Henry Algernon Horn came to the US from London in 1868 with his brother, Charles James Horn.Henry sent for his fiancee, Isabella Reed, the next year or so, and they were married. In the 1880 census, however, Henry's family is listed as surname "Algernon."Was this just a mistake, or did my ancestors change their name forever?Did his brother Charles Horn also change his name to "Algernon"?Did he marry? Can anyone in LA do a lookup to find anything more on this family?I know Henry died about 1882-4, and his wife married a man named Hays by 1886.They lived in Plaquemine, LA, I thought--don't know why they were found in 1880 in New Orleans, but Henry was a traveling photographer/artist.Isabella had been a dressmaker for Queen Victoria before coming to the US--or so says family handed down stories. In old pictures we see her in beautiful dresses. Her daughter, Mary Carolyn "Carrie" Horn married in 1900 to Benjamin F. "Frank" Cox from Baton Rouge. His family had owned a plantation named "Laurel Grove Place" near Baton Rouge, and his ancestor was William Patrick Coxe whose wife was Charlotte Paine Williams (widow).I'd love to hear from anyone in LA about these families. Thanks!
