Amy Family in St. Landry Parish
RE: Ancestry of August A. Amy and Leontine Whaley Amy of Opelousas, Louisiana.
I am the grandaughter of August A. and Leontine Whaley Amy, daughter of their oldest daughter, Josie Flavia Perkins Carriere. Your wife's father, Errol, is my first counsin. My mother tells me that her paternal grandfather's name was Napoleon Amy. He supposedly attended military school during the Civil War, evidently in the Virginia area. He was not old enough to serve.
I only know my grandmother's maiden name: Whaley. According to family stories, her parents were killed in a buggy accident when she, her sister, Eugenie, and brother, Joseph, were very young. Leontine was reared by family friends; Eugenie and Joseph were taken in by relatives near Leonville and were not treated well. That explains Leontine's protectiveness of her sister Eugenie. Uncle Joe, great-uncle to me, worked until he retired from Texaco in Beaumont. Neither he nor Eugenie ever married. My mother and I were his heirs.
I remember that the Willis family was somehow a part of the Whaley clan. How, I don't remember. Also, I believe that the man I called Uncle John, was either John Francis or Francis John Amy, the brother of August A. Amy and son of Napoleon Amy. I know this from my documented father's family history--John Francis or Francis John married my father's first counsin, Mathilde. They all lived around Opelousas.
I am just starting to try to learn more about my mother's family. I have a very thorough Carriere history, back to the 1600's. I would appreciate anything you have been able to find out. Additionally, I used to baby sit your wife and her sisters when they were young. I would love to visit over the phone. My phone is 225-954-4648.
