Maxine:
I recommend that you go to www.mapquest.com and punch in "New Orleans" and "LA" in the appropriate boxes. The large body of water that appears to the north edge of the map is Lake Pontchartrain. New Orleans is the biggest settlement near the Lake; it and its suburbs are to the south, largely between the Lake and the Mississippi River.
There are also smaller cities and towns on the north side of the Lake, on the Northeast, and to a lesser extent on the Southeast.
It is likely that your families lived in or nearby New Orleans as it is and was a major port city.
