Just have to put my two bits in but like things to be accurate.Red River does not meet up with, enter into, leave or have anything to do with the Mississippi River.Red River, after being joined by the Black River (which is made up of Little River, Ouchita River and Tensas River)enters the (and forgive this spelling,) and just about makes up, the Atchafalya River north of Simmsport and then it heads off to the Gulf entering the Gulf at Morgan City. The Old River Structure diverts a portion of the flow of the Mississippi into the Atchafalaya but this diversion must be controlled because the Mississippi wants to move west into the Atchafalaya - this was the big scare in the last 100 year flood (of which we have had several in the last 20 years). The current of the Mississippi was eating away the base of the old river structure and there was great concern that the structure would fail and the Mississippi would take the route of the atchafalya and salt water would back up from the Gulf as far as Baton Rouge.
Having said that there is a lock between the Mississippi and the Atchafalya just downstream from where the Red enters the Atchafalya and north of Simmsport. This is how barge traffic gets out of the Mississippi into the Atchafalya and then on into the red and on up to Shreveport or into the Black.
Now if my memory of history is correct Red River Landing is in this area and is in Avoyelles Parish (but I am not sure it is in Avoyelles).
