Alan,
There is a Waldrip family living in Quitman, La (5-6 miles north of Jonesboro, La. on US 167 at it's intersection with La 155). They are well known in the community. I believe the family was responsible for donating the land to the Quitman High School known as "Waldrip field" for cross country track. You can check at the Jackson Parish Courthouse Clerk of Courts office for more information (318-259-2424).
