There is no 1890 federal census for most states. Very few records remained after a fire in the federal building in which they were stored. Some states and counties have reconstructed censuses, coming from tax and other such local lists. I checked the tax records at the courthouse in Harrisonburg when I was there and they don't go back very far. I believe there was a fire there also, shortly after 1900.
