My great great grandfather stated in his Civil War pension application in Texas that he was born near Harrisonburg in Catahoula Parish, LA. Family tradition also states that he was born in Louisiana and that his family was wiped out by an epidemic of some kind, probably in the late 1850s. He was born George Washington Williams on 11/24/1843. The 1850 Catahoula Parish census lists him in a household with Samuel Williams, age 50, and Sarah, age 25. However, he told his youngest son (whose daughter is still living and with whom I have communicated) that his father’s name was Benjamin Franklin Williams and his mother was Sarah Taylor. This suggests that maybe Samuel was his grandfather and that Benjamin Franklin Williams had already died. George Washington Williams granddaughter (the one that I have communicated with) says that she visited “several” years ago and found the location of the old farm place (her dad had said that Benjamin Franklin Williams had a farm “in” Harrisonburg) and that it “was where the highway is”, whatever that means. She said that the land was sold years ago for taxes. Does anyone know anything about these four people, Samuel Williams born about 1800, Sarah (Taylor) WiIliams born about 1825, Benjamin Franklin Williams, George Washington Williams born 1843 or any potential relatives? George Washington Williams ended up in Texas and I have a fairly comprehensive list of his many descendants that I would be happy to share. I would also be delighted to discover a new Louisiana cousin if there is one out there.
