Maplewood was a housing development between Lake Charles and Sulphur. It had a school and shopping center, with a bank, post office, A& P, library and other shops including a hardware store, variety store and dress shops.
It is now part of Sulphur. The school is still there and there have been reunions of the community.
The housing development was owned by a company called "Maplewood Housing". Sometime in the early sixties it went out of business. Most of the houses were sold to be moved, but a few people bought the land and houses and they are still there.
There are still the churches in the same places they were then. Maplewood United Methodist, Maplewood First Baptist, a Church of Christ, and a Presbyterian Church all in Center Circle area. The library has been moved from its original location, but faces Center Circle. The Lutheran Church, Trinity, and The Episcopal Church, were closer to Sulphur on what was then Parish Road, but is now called Maplewood Drive.
Maplewood is located between U.S. 108 (Cities Service Hwy.) and Bayou d'Inde Road (also known as old Cities Service Hwy.)
My family lived just outside Maplewood for several years, and my dad worked at the A & P. You could perhaps contact one of the churches or the school (Maplewood Elementary/Maplewood Middle School) for more information.
