Hi Alice,

I saw your note regarding wanting to know more information on the older generations of the Attaway family that includes Elisha F. Attaway (Birth 5 May 1793 in Burke County, Georgia and Death 5 Sept 1870 in Blanchard, Caddo Parish, Louisiana) and Rebecca Ford Attaway (Birth 20 Jan 1802 in Georgia and Death 5 Dec 1863 in Blanchard, Caddo Parrish, Louisiana).

I am interested in Elisha Attaway (1793-1870) because on the 1870 U.S. census my ggg-grandfather, Spencer Philips, my ggg-grandmother, Elizabeth Duncan Philips, and three of their younger children (Martha, Lewis, and James Philips) are living with 78-year-old widowed Elisha Attaway in Ward 1 of caddo parish, Louisiana. My ggg-grandfather, Spencer Philips, was himself 73 years old at that time. Spencer and Elisha are both listed as farmers on the census report. I have not been able to locate a family connection between Spencer and Elisha, so their relationship could have simply been landowner (Elisha) and hired farm laborer (Spencer). However, both men served in the War of 1812 so Spencer and Elisha could have gotten to know each other while serving in the military. Also, Elizabeth and Elisha were both born and raised in Georgia. Elisha also owned land and/or lived in areas in Georgia that were close to Monroe and Spalding counties where Spencer and Elizabeth raised the majority of their children from 1827 to the late 1860s.

Here is what I have been able to find out about the Attaway family further back then Elisha and Rebecca.

Elisha F. Attaway's parents were Joseph B. Attaway (Birth 1755 in South Carolina and Death 1846 in Laurens, Laurens, South Carolina) and Edith "Edie" Nations (Birth 1773 in Burke, Georgia and Death 1816 in Edgefield, Spartanburg, South Carolina).

Rebecca Ford Attaway's parents were William Sparks Ford (Birth Aug 21, 1782 in Virginia and Death 1860 in Many, Sabine Parrish, Louisiana) and Nancy Kendrick (Birth May 15, 1785 in Virginia and Death in Sabine Parrish, Louisiana). Nancy Kendrick's parents were Burrell kendrick and Katy Davis.

The parents of Joseph B. Attaway (b. 1755) were Elisha B. Attaway Sr. (Birth 1726 in Wales, England and Death April 1, 1816 in Edgefield District, South Carolina) and Lettice Barton (Birth abt 1737 in Ireland and Death abt 1816 in Edgefield, Spartanburg, South Carolina).

The parents of Lettice Barton Attaway (b. 1737) were Edward Barton and Ann Scarlett.

The parents of Elisha B. Attaway Sr. (b. 1726) were William Thomas Attaway and Elizabeth Hatley.

I hope this information is useful to you.
