Hi Emmett,

I saw your note about wanting to know more about your greatgrandfather Charles Leonard Ballard. Here is some information that I found out about him amd his family. First, it appears he went by his middle name, Leonard, most often. Second, his surname was often misspelled (e.g. Belard, Bellar, Beller, Bullard).

He was married 4 Jul 1865 in Nacogdoches, Nacogdoches County, Texas (Texas Marriages, 1814-1909) to May Ann Vick (born 1844 in Louisiana, died 1884 in Lockhart, Caldwell County, Texas; daughter of Henry Price Vick, 1824-1864, and mary Stephenson, 1822-1860). (Charles) Leonard Ballard died 15 Aug 1919 in Wichita, Wichita County, Texas. His name appears as Charles L. Ballard on the Texas Death Index (certificate #25544).

A picture of (Charles) Leonard Ballard was provided by Perry Ballard of the town of Opp in Covington County, Alabama and is located at this link:

The children of (Charles) Leonard Ballard and Mary Ann Vick Ballard were: (1) Francis Elizabeth Ballard (1867-), (2) James Franklin "Sr." Ballard (1868-1946), (3) Marthy Caroline Ballard (1871-), (4) John W. M. Ballard (1873-), (5) Charles Ballard (1874-1951), and (6) Robert L. Ballard (1876-1969).

(Charles) Leonard Ballard appears at age 70 (a widower) on the 1900 U.S. census in Justice Precinct 3 in Wise County, Texas in the household of his son, James F. Ballard.

He appears as Leonard Bellar with wife Mary Ann Bellar and children Francis, James, John, Charles and Robert Bellar on the 1880 U.S. census in Caldwell County, Texas.

He appears as Leonard Beller with wife Mary Beller and children (Francis) Elizabeth and James Beller in District 5 of Nacogdoches County, Texas.

His parents, Charles A Bullard (born about 1798 in Massachusetts) and Julia A Bullard (born about 1813 in Louisiana), and siblings, Annie A, Charles A, and Julia A Bullard appear on the 1860 U.S. census in Natchitoches County, Louisiana.

A decade before he appears as Leonard Bullard with his father C. A. Bullard, mother Julia Bullard, and siblings Anne, Mary, Charles, and Julia Bullard on the 1850 U.S. census in Natchitoches County, Louisiana.

Leonard Bellar is listed as having the following military service. He enlisted in 1862 as a private in Company A (Chambers') of Griffin's Battalion in the 21st Regiment of the Texas Infantry for the Confederate States of America (CSA) (U.S. Civil War Soldiers, 1861-1865, Film Number M227, roll 3).
