I am trying to learn more about my great-grandmother who was from Caddo Pa., LA. Her name was Nancy Delia Kent, and she was born in 1874. Her marriage license from Caddo Pa., in 1894 has her name as Delly Kent (one witness was W. A. Kent of Caddo Pa). She married my great-grandfather George W. Peek. In various census records I have found her as Dillia, Dillie, and Nancy D.
The census record of most interest to me however is the one from 1880 Caddo Pa., LA; which I just found yesterday. Nancy Delia is listed in the household of J. R. Kent and M. A. Kent. Here is the puzzle though; every child listed in the household had the last name Flowers, including my great-grandmother, who is listed as Nancy D. Flowers, age 5. Even the youngest son, William R., 9/12 mos, is listed as Flowers.
My question, of course, is about the last name Flowers. Was J. R. Kent the second husband of M. A. Flowers, or had J. R. and M. A. Kent adopted a family of orphans? The census listed the children as sons and daughters, not as adopted or stepchildren.
Also, not meaning to confuse things but, it is a family legend that Nancy D. was Native American. In fact my Aunt says Nancy D. was a descendant from a tribe that started with the letter A. I have learned there were several Native American tribes in Louisiana that started with the letter A, most of whom had left Louisiana by 1874 and I have not been able to substantiate any family link to any Native American tribe. Nancy D. is listed as white in every census I have found her in so far.
If anyone has any information about this family line, please let me know? I would be most grateful and willing to share whatever I learn about the Flowers and Kent families in my research. Thanks, Diana
