Who were the parents of DENNIS SMITH who was married to ELIZABETH MAXWEL on Nov. 8, 1859 Avoyelles Parish.??

Mary Alice SMITH (dau of Denis and Elizabeth) md ALCIE LABORDE May 13, 1876 in Avoyelles Parish. The death certificate for Mary Alice Smith says that she was born in St. Mary Parish on Feb 9, 1860.

Denis W. Smith and Elizabeth Maxwell were married in Avoyelles on Nov 8, 1859, then they were in St. Mary's by Feb. 9, 1860 for Mary Alice to be born and in St. Landry's on Oct. 9, 1860 in time to be counted in the census. So they were obviously moving around. In the 1860 St.Landry census, Denis said he was a "manager", had no real estate but he had $6.200 in personal property. I am thinking that he owned slaves that he moved from place to place to work on plantations. Does anyone know if people did that back in those days?
