Berry / Barry / Frederick / Babineaux / Abbeville, LA

Frederick Cemetery, Hwy 338, Abbeville, LA (Private Cemetery - 1 acre) Started during the Civil War in 1860s during a yellow fever epidemic, Donated by Jean Charles Frederick. This cemetery remains in existence today, however, it has been neglected and sits in the middle of a cow pasture. (See "Echos of the Past", Vermilion Genealogical Society, Vol. 4, #1, pg 26 - I copied this page for my files.) Jean Charles Frederick was my ggg-grandfather. I visited this cemetery and took pictures.

I just came across the post listed above and am hoping to visit the Frederick Cemetery with my mom (Famo and Francis’s youngest child) in the near future. It would be great if you would be willing to send the pictures you took so that I could show her before we go.

I have a letter written to my grandparents, Famo and Francis Barry (Francoise Beard) of Lake Arthur, LA, from the Babineaux's in Abbeville posted marked Oct.1975 that states they have traveled to cemetery and "scraped Grandma Eves grave, grandma & grandpa Jean's grave and Aunt Graceoi's grave, Aunt Matheildes grave seemed fine." The names may be a little off as the letter is handwritten and in cursive so a little hard to read. It goes on to state that she has "traced Grandpa Jean Frederick's parents back to Duesseldorf Germany". In addition, she states that Uncle Louis's granddaughter and her husband have acquired ownership of the land where the cemetery is. They have really worked & pulled a house just about where the old house stood before it burned - and the cemetery is visible from the highway once more.

I am hoping the Frederick Cemetery is the same one in your post.

More info on my grandparents:

Sisters, Azina Berry, Medora Berry, Mary Berry could be Gladys Marie, and May Berry. Looking for information on my grandfather Famo Barry’s parents and their parents. However, any information on his brothers and sisters is welcome. I have found a thread for Azina Berry married to Simon Trahan.
