George Bertrand, 80, of Evangeline, LA died peacefully at the Jeff Davis Living Center in Jennings at 9:45 a.m. Monday, May 17, 2004. He was a native of Evangeline and a 1941 graduate of Iota High School. George was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, having served in the European Theater of Operations. After his discharge, he worked in the oil fields briefly. He then attended Southwestern Louisiana Institute, now the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, where he was a first sergeant in the Air Force ROTC unit. Upon graduation, he taught for two years, then entered the Air Force as a second lieutenant. He served 20 years and retired with the rank of captain. Upon his return, he served as a teacher, Acadia Parish School Board's director of adult education, state supervisor of adult education and state director of adult education. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Edna Lavergne Bertrand; son, George Gerald of Orlando, Fla.; three stepchildren, Donna Presley and Denny Lopez, both of Jennings and R.J. Lopez of Houston; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a brother, Dr. John A. Bertrand of Crowley; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph Avery Bertrand and Anaise Boone Bertrand; a brother, Joseph Francis Bertrand; a sister, Lorraine Bertrand Strickler. Funeral arrangements are with Matthews & Son Funeral Home, Jennings. Burial in Calvary Cemetery, Jennings, LA.
